Beads are usually small round pieces of pierced glass, wood or metal strung together to serve as adornment for the waist, neck or ankle beads. Besides beautification, beads are worn for many other reasons. Back in the days, a type of bead worn by someone tells you who or where the person is coming from or the position of the person in the family or society.

Today we are going to talk about waist-beads. Waist-beads are very attractive and come with a lot of advantages and also there are many mysteries surrounding wearing of beads. Lets take a look at some reasons why African women invest in them.

The female half of South African music group Mafikizolo,Β Nhlanhla NcizaΒ has a serious Afrocentric style game that is unrivalled. With a personal style that pays attention to fabric, she is a unique trendsetter. The South African fashion designerΒ recently turned 40, but that hasn’t stopped her as she continues to show us just how prints are meant to be rocked!

Adubea (Janet Oddoye) was born in England to a Danish mother with an eye for beautiful soft furnishings and vintage clothing, and a Ghanaian father, civil engineer by day and amiable socialite by night. At a tender age, Adubea was steeped in an aesthetic that was quintessentially Danish as well as being influenced by traditionally African social and moral codes of conduct.

Naturally gifted with her hands along with an inherent faculty for attention to detail, Adubea learnt from her maternal grandmother, how to crotchet, knit and needlework during her visits to Denmark.

Her education in a prestigious international school in Ghana broadened her cultural horizons and further reinforced her values of integrity, based upon the giving back principle from a position of privilege. But perhaps more importantly the flames of her love affair with Africa were fanned.

As a young mother and wife in London, she embarked on a seventeen-year career in direct sales, attaining senior directorship level. Her human resources skills, methodical thought processes and tireless work ethic evolved, as did the numerous teams under her mentor-ship.

However, her passion for all things beautifully hand crafted coupled with her thirst for design knowledge did not wane. She proceeded to enlist herself in various courses covering interior design, furniture upholstery and jewellery design, culminating in business skills: a holistic strategy eventually harnessed to introduce the world to theΒ ADUBEA JENSENΒ luxury handbag line.

Adubea Jensen handbags are uniquely made using tiny beads which are woven together to form exquisite one- of-a-kind bead bags. The process is 100% handmade and a bag can take up to 50 hours to make. Their vibrant colors and amazing designs speak to the modern, fashionable and sophisticated woman. Coupled with the limited availability of each design, owning an Adubea Jensen handbag becomes an irresistible must-have.

Adubea Jensen Designs Limited, established only in 2014, encapsulates Adubea’s life journey. The beautifully chic accessories range is homage to her personal and cultural narrative to date.

The design led precision, muted hues, quality craftsmanship and flamboyant tones demanded by Adubea sit perfectly with her mentorship and training programmes.

In Namibia, where the average temperature in the summer is 80 degrees, Herero women deck themselves out with long sleeves and petticoats. Their gorgeous dresses, elaborate headpieces, and vibrant patterns showcase their pride in their identity, all the while alluding to the suffering they’ve endured within the past 100 years β€” including a genocide that nearly wiped them out.

But what produced the Herero sense of style is clearly known. In the late 19thΒ century, the Germans took possession of β€œGerman South Africa” (nowadays Namibia). They then systematically appropriated Herero grazing land and brought Herero people in to work for them. The wives of the German colonialists and missionaries took upon themselves to teach the women working in their houses how to dress β€œproperly”.

The Herero people resisted expropriation for many years and started a β€œgreat rebellion” that ended with their near destruction in the early 1900s. One would think that the Hereros would have rejected a style of dressing imposed by the colonialists, yet the Herero women embraced it fully and to this day have fiercely protected their dress as a crucial part of their cultural identity.

Herero dress is important to their personal identities, and individual, clan,Β and national expressions of remembrance and protest.

So even in Namibia’s tropical climate, Herero ladies wear heavy dresses, reflecting the style of the Victorian period with numerous petticoats worn to add roundness to their skirts.Though it’s evolved in the past century, much of the ensemble’s main features have endured: floor-sweeping hemlines, long sleeves, petticoats (which can total up to 24 meters of fabric), and signatures like bold, waxed prints, fringed capes, and a horned hat that honors the Herero’s cow herding roots.Β

One can see them while visiting Herero villages but also in larger cities, like in Windhoek, Namibia’s capital. The dresses are hand-sewn, with women adding their own personal flair, and are topped off with an elaborate horn-shaped headgear sometimes made of a matching fabric. The headdress is said to represent the horns of the cattle, which are so important to the Himba and Herero communities. These elaborate dresses also convey social status as only married women wear them. (Unmarried women wear more typical, modern western clothes.) Also, the size of the hat is an indication of the size of cattle herd own by the family; a larger hat suggests a more prosperous family. The Herero women take enormous pride in their outfits.

You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I’ll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? β€˜Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Does my haughtiness offend you? Don’t you take it awful hard β€˜Cause I laugh like I’ve got gold mines Diggin’ in my own backyard. You may shoot me with your words, You may cut me with your eyes, You may kill me with your hatefulness, But still, like air, I’ll rise. Does my sexiness upset you? Does it come as a surprise That I dance like I’ve got diamonds At the meeting of my thighs? Out of the huts of history’s shame I rise Up from a past that’s rooted in pain I rise I’m a black ocean, leaping and wide, Welling and swelling I bear in the tide. Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that’s wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. Hello loves! Happy Friday Eve! One thing I've learned from about 5 years in America's corporate force is that you MUST learn to show up and SPEAK UP!!! Here's a piece that describes this succinctly . One of the best things I did at the start of my career was to master the art ofΒ impromptu speaking. Through Toastmasters meetings, I practiced something called Table Topics every week for seven years. Table Topics is an exercise in which speakers are assigned a random topic by a moderator and then must speak immediately for 60 to 90 seconds. Not only do you improve by repeatedly being put on the spot with no advanced preparation, but you also learn from other participants' feedback.~ Sabina Nawaz . Are you a business owner? If put on the spot can you sell your business? Can you sell yourself? Are you the silent type in meetings? Can you speak with intelligence and confidence when with other professionals? The good thing is speaking up is a skill I learned with loads of practice and just like any other skill, with time, consistent practice will make you better! The bottom line is this, If you want to be successful, You MUST show up and SPEAK UP! It's in you!! ❀❀❀ .
