Joseph Awuah-Darko, the UK born Ghanaian also known as Økuntakinte is an artist and  entrepreneur. You may know of Økuntakinte from his #MelaninGirls Campaign which took social media by storm in 2016. The 21 year old recently petitioned to four decision makers, the world bank, Greenpeace USA, United Nations and Ban Ki-moon (Secretary-General of the United Nations) to do their part  to change the narrative of the worlds largest E-waste dump- Agbogloshie. Let’s all come together to bring this change.

In one of his tweets, he said “This is the world’s largest e-waste dump, Agbogbloshie. It’s in Ghana and I’m going to change this”

Every year over 215,000 tons of e-waste is legally and illegally dumped at Agbogbloshie (Ghana) from the more developed western countries. Unfortunately, the repercussions of this have been the severe environmental degradation that has manifested itself at Agbogbloshie dubbed “Sodom and Gomorrah”. Low-income inhabitants (poor men, women and children) trying to survive practice the burning of this electronic waste and scrap to salvage and sell the metals derived from this process. This self-harmful burning has serious health implications.

Low-income inhabitants (poor men, women and children) trying to survive practice the burning of this electronic waste and scrap to salvage and sell the metals derived from this process. This self-harmful burning is severely detrimental to the health of these individuals and releases toxic gases into the atmosphere. However, Agbogbloshie is more than just a dump site, a micro-economy has been established at the Old Fadama slum regarding the profitable redistribution and sale of metal scrap by the inhabitants at Agbogbloshie.
